Creative Fiction & Journalism (non-fiction) Writing (A)
For the first half of the class, students will learn about fiction writing and techniques to enhance their storytelling. Students will learn how to write a fictional story, and specific emphasis will be placed on character development, setting, dialogue, and structure. This part of the class will culminate with each student writing a short story, and then sharing it in a supportive environment. The second half of the class will focus on non-fiction writing and journalism. Students will learn various elements of journalism, including interviewing techniques, ways to research to enhance a fact-based story, and how to write an article using the standard "inverted pyramid" style. By the end of class, students will have written a fact-based article that includes interviews from "experts," and will have the opportunity to share their article with the class.
